I first met Peter Herrmann in November 1998 when he visited Kenya with the idea of filming "Nowhere in Africa". The whole experience over the next three years was extraordinary for me and the Kenyan crew. The fact that the film is such an outstanding success is an added bonus for us all, and for Kenya. -Jenny Pont

Caroline Link and myself knew that Kenya as a place for a film production would be more difficult, complex and more strenuous than South Africa. We opted for Kenya and were sure the film would be more authentic, atmospheric and have better locations; besides, a Zulu is not a Masai or Pokot.
Some scenes required more than 200 extras, but the incredible Kenyan crew made it all possible, despite many unforeseen events and mishaps. We wrapped, as scheduled, the Thursday before Easter.

"Our story is an German /Kenyan story and most of it in Kenya - and after a lot of brainstorming, we decided that it must be Kenya. Also because of my wish to use the original locations and the many extras we needed.
To make a film in such a beautiful country is an incredible adventure and I regret not being able to have more enjoyed the magical place Kenya is, as our relaxed crew did."
